Bertrand Chavarria-Aldrete

Bertrand Chavarría-Aldrete is a guitarist, composer, and transdisciplinary researcher in artistic research.

With nearly thirty years of international performing experience across France, Spain, Russia, Italy, Sweden, Mexico, Portugal, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, and beyond, Bertrand Chavarría-Aldrete has become a recognized figure in contemporary music, both as a soloist and chamber musician, having premiered more than 90 works. His repertoire spans from the complete music for vihuela by Alonso Mudarra to works by Manuel M. Ponce, Brian Ferneyhough, and his own compositions. His solo recordings have received critical acclaim, and he has built an extensive catalogue of recordings made throughout Europe and the Americas.

As a composer, Bertrand Chavarría-Aldrete has received two international awards (Molinari Quartet International Composition Competition, Canada; Neue Musik Baden-Württemberg e.V., Germany). His music has been commissioned by institutions such as the Ensemble Intercontemporain, Fondation Banque Populaire, Kulturrådet, and the Maison de la Musique Contemporaine, and performed at venues and festivals including the Philharmonie de Paris, Klang Festival, Skissernas Museum, Festival Musique en Charolais-Brionnais, and the National Concert Hall in Dublin.

Bertrand Chavarría-Aldrete holds a PhD from Lund University. His research project, Plastic Extension of Music, explores the plasticity of sound and its translation into tactile, visual, and sculptural forms. Recognized by the Royal Swedish Academy of Music (Research of the Month: KMA 250 Years) and selected for the Swedish Forskar Grand Prix (2025), this research has been presented in international exhibitions in France, Sweden, Germany, Portugal, and Spain, as well as at conferences hosted by Sorbonne University, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Uniarts, and Aarhus School of Architecture.

Committed to inclusive artistic practices, Bertrand Chavarría-Aldrete has created numerous projects with marginalized communities, including Guided by the Blind to Perform for the Deaf with blind and hard-of-hearing participants, de(cor)o with people with disabilities, forassa with older adults, and the performance work sc(herz)o infinito for children.

Based in Malmö since 2023, Bertrand Chavarría-Aldrete teaches Plastic Extension of Music at the Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts of Lund University, where he also supervises artistic research projects.
