Enguerrand de Hys

Enguerrand de Hys is a tenor renowned for the elegance of his singing and the precision of his technique.

He began his vocal studies at the Toulouse Conservatory before enrolling at the CNSMDP. During his studies, Enguerrand de Hys participated in the Mozart Academy at the Aix-en-Provence Festival and the Royaumont Abbey Academy. Winner of the 2014 Adami Classical Revelation Award, he is a member of the Nouvelle Troupe Favart at the Opéra-Comique and is in residence, with the Ayònis trio, at the Théâtre Impérial in Compiègne.

Among his recent engagements are, among others, Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet at the Opéra de Nice, Calpigi in Salieri’s Tarare, conducted by Christophe Rousset at the Opéra de Versailles and the Theater an der Wien, Marinoni in Offenbach’s Fantasio at the Opéra de Montpellier, and the Prince in Trois Contes by Gérard Pesson and David Lescot at the Opéra de Lille.

Enguerrand de Hys has also performed in recitals at the Opéra-Comique, the Opéra National de Bordeaux, the Opéra de Lille, and the Palazzetto Bru Zane in Venice, and has performed Gounod’s La Cantate Marie Stuart in Padua.

In 2019, he made a mark in the premiere of Francesco Filidei’s L’Inondation at the Opéra-Comique with his portrayal of the Neighbor.

Enguerrand de Hys sang Le Retour d’Idoménée at the Opéra de Lille, conducted by Emmanuelle Haïm; Léodès in Fauré’s Pénélope at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse; Mercure in Rameau’s Platée at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, conducted by William Christie; Titus in La Clémence de Titus at the Midsummer Festival in Brussels, Tamorin in Grétry’s La Caravane du Caire at the Opéra de Tours, conducted by Hervé Niquet, Arcas in Campra’s Idomenée at the Opéra de Lille and the Staatsoper Berlin, conducted by Emmanuelle Haïm, Monostatos in The Magic Flute at the Opéra de Rouen, Artemidorus in Glück’s Armide at the Opéra-Comique under the direction of Christophe Rousset, Valère in La Sérénade at the Opéra d’Avignon with the Palazzetto Bru Zane, Cecco in Haydn’s Il Mondo della luna at the Opéra de Metz, The Neighbor in L’Inondation at the Opéra-Comique, The Earl of Surrey in Saint-Saëns’s Henri VIII at La Monnaie / De Munt, Tamorin in Grétry’s La Caravane du Caire at the Royal Opera of Versailles under the direction of Hervé Niquet, and Prince Quippasseparla in Offenbach’s Le Voyage dans la lune with the Palazzetto Bru Zane.

Most recently, Enguerrand de Hys appeared as Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni) and Pedrillo (The Abduction from the Seraglio) at the Royal Opera of Versailles, as the tenor in the Mass in C minor at the Limoges Opera in a staged production, and as Artémidore in Lully’s Armide at the Opéra-Comique, Mercury in Orpheus in the Underworld at the Capitole in Toulouse, Pomponet in La Fille de Madame Angot at the Opéra de Nice and Avignon, directed by Richard Brunel, Hans Baumann in B. Mantovani’s Voyage d’automne at the Capitole, Remendado in Carmen at La Monnaie/De Munt, the Prince in Les Contes de Perrault with Les Frivolités Parisiennes, directed by Valérie Lesort, and Handel’s Messiah at the Opéra de Saint-Étienne.

Among his recent performances, note Le Comte Barigoule in Pauline Viardot’s Cendrillon, directed by David Lescot, on tour with La Coopérative and the Rennes Opera; Mercure in Offenbach’s Orphée aux enfers at the Tours Opera; Pedrillo in The Abduction from the Seraglio at the Versailles Opera, directed by Michel Fau; Félix Fourdrain’s Les Contes de Perrault, directed by Valérie Lesort at the Opéra de Dijon, Ottavio in Don Giovanni and Tamorin in Grétry’s La Caravane du Caire at the Opéra de Versailles, Tournemire’s La Passion du Christ at the Ruhrtriennale, Calpigi in Salieri’s Tarare, Baptiste in Offenbach’s The Bridge of Sighs with the Palazzetto Bru Zane at several French theaters.

On disc, Enguerrand de Hys has participated in the recording of Lalo’s La Jacquerie with the Palazzetto Bru Zane, and has recorded the roles of Lychas, Pheres, Alecton, and Apollo in Lully’s Alceste with Christophe Rousset and Les Talens lyriques for Aparté, and the role of Blondel in Grétry’s Richard the Lionheart under the direction of Hervé Niquet.
