Inspired by the legacy of French composers and with a particular focus on contemporary music, the Ravel Academy launched the Maurice Ravel Composition Academy in 2022 with a first edition directed by Philippe Manoury.
In collaboration with the Centre Supérieur de Musique du Pays Basque – Musikene, the 2024 composition class was directed by Michael Jarrell, with Basque, French, and Spanish composer Ramon Lazkano and conductor Othman Louati leading the ensembles.
Five young composers from leading European institutions spent several months developing their pieces, refining them at the Academy in August.
Their pieces premiered on August 30 during the composition competition, performed live by musicians from the Académie Ravel and Musikene.
