“What would it have sounded like, had Satie been composing today?”
In 1925, after Satie’s death, his friends entered his apartment and were amazed to find, in addition to an unusually large number of umbrellas and astounding chaos, two grand pianos stacked one on top of the other.
The performance by Tamar Halperin and Guy Sternberg is the musical equivalent of this image, where a piano, electric keyboards, glockenspiel, and a computer build up a contemporary Satie sound.
The concert is a tribute to Erik Satie, an eccentric French composer who died a century ago, and whose unusual, groundbreaking music influenced almost every art form in the century that followed. Alongside music of Satie himself, the program also presents work by Debussy, John Cage, and Chick Corea — prominent composers who were deeply influenced by him. In the spirit of Satie, the conventions of the classical piano recital format are challenged: Piano pieces are orchestrated for various keyboard instruments and electronic sounds, and performed in succession, for about 60 minutes without a break. Each piece “overlaps” with previous and following pieces, so that the original miniatures add up to a large structure and create a long, meditative journey. Alongside the performance of composed works, there are also passages of improvisation from both Guy Sternberg and Tamar Halperin.
