Raphael Masters
Raphael Masters is an acclaimed violist from Sydney, Australia, and a recent graduate of the Colburn School in Los Angeles. He has performed with the Wiener Staatsoper, Sydney Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, LA Chamber Orchestra and Vienna Chamber Orchestra and was the No. 2 chair at the Philharmonia Orchestra in London.
As a soloist, Raphael Masters has appeared at Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House, and as a chamber artist at the Edinburgh International Festival and Musikverein Wien. He has participated in major festivals including the Aspen, Geneva String Academy, Fontainebleau and the DSQ Academy. He has performed chamber music with artists such as Noah Bendix-Balgley, Arnaud Sussmann, Jon Kimura Parker, Clive Greensmith, and Peter Bruns. His mentors include Paul Coletti, Tatjana Masurenko, and Yura Lee, and he is currently pursuing a Master of Music in Vienna with Jennifer Stumm.
He has worked with leading violists as part of IMS Prussia Cove, and Kronberg Academy Masterclasses such as Thomas Riebl, Ettore Causa and others.As a member of the Ápeiron Quartet, Raphael Masters was awarded the HFP Kammermusik Prize. He also studied in Madrid at the International Chamber Music Institute with Günther Pichler as a member of the Ineo Quartet.
He performs on a modern instrument from Leipzig and is generously supported by the Australian Music Foundation and Ian Potter Cultural Trust. Raphael Masters will take up a position in the European Orchestra Academy as part of the Budapest Festival Orchestra under the direction of Ivan Fischer for the 2026-27 Season.
