Othman Louati
Othman Louati is a French composer, conductor and percussionist. After winning four prizes at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, he worked extensively with the ensembles Miroirs Étendus (Artiste Associé) and Le Balcon. With the latter, he took part in Stockhausen’s “Licht” cycle, which had a decisive influence on his music. As a percussionist, he plays with prestigious ensembles such as the Orchestre de Paris, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Les Dissonances, the Ensemble Intercontemporain, the Paris Percussion Group, the Xenakis collective and the Comédie Française.
As a conductor, he perfected his skills under the aegis of the Peter Eötvös Foundation and with Johannes Schlaefli. He specializes in twentieth- and twenty-first-century repertoire, most recently with Ensemble Ars Nova, Les Illuminations and Le Balcon. He took part in the creation of the Licht cycle (conducted by Maxime Pascal, Philharmonie de Paris, Opéra Comique) and Sivan Edar’s opera Like Flesh (Opéra de Lille, Opéra de Montpellier) as assistant musical director.
His output includes works commissioned by Radio France, Coopérative Opéra, Les Concerts de Poche, the Haut-de-France and Normandie regions, La Comédie Française, Le Balcon, Miroirs Etendus, the Tourcoing Conservatoire and numerous festivals across France. His piece Nuits (2022) was co-winner of UNESCO’s International Rostrum of Women Composers (2023).
In 2023, he wrote for the Trio Xenakis & Feu! Chatterton as part of their residency at the Musée du Louvre, as well as a string quartet for Radio France’s Festival Présences 2024.
Her first opera, Les Ailes du Désir (Wings of Desire) by Wim Wenders, with libretto by Gwendoline Soublin, will be performed during the 2023/2024 season at the Opéras de Rennes, Nantes-Angers and Dijon, as well as on the national stages of Dunkerqdeue, Tourcoing, Compiègne, Besançon and Quimper.
