Maurice Ravel befriends Andr\u00e9 Pavlowsky, Marguerite Long, L\u00e9on Blum and his relative by marriage Alfred Cortot, Gustave Samazeuilh, Ricardo Vines and the artists of the Ballets Russes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>1914 |<\/strong> the declaration of war takes him by surprise in Saint-Jean-de-Luz; he fails in his attempt to enlist in Bayonne.<br \/>\nAugust 29: end of <em>Trio<\/em>, as he writes to Jacques Durand. In September and October, he takes care of the wounded at the Casino de Saint-Jean-de-Luz, then chosen as a hospital. He begins composing <em>Tombeau de Couperin<\/em> (completed in 1916), partly dedicated to his friends in the Basque country: the Gaudin brothers, the painter Gabriel Deluc, Captain de Marliave, husband of Marguerite Long.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>1917 |<\/strong> January 5, death of his mother. Maurice Ravel explains: \u201cNow it&#8217;s a horrible despair!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>1920 |<\/strong> He refuses the L\u00e9gion d&#8217;Honneur awarded to him by the Basses-Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es deputy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>1921 |<\/strong> Ravel&#8217;s first post-war stay in Paris, where he reunited with his two friends, Marie Gaudin and Jeanne Courteault; he also met Ricardo Vi\u00f1es, his brother the painter Jos\u00e9 Vi\u00f1es, as well as Igor Stravinsky, Ramiro Arrue, Pierre Benoit, Arthur Rubinstein, Padre Donostia, and the Casadesus and Godebski families (whose children were the dedicatees of <em>Ma m\u00e8re l&#8217;Oye<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>1926 |<\/strong> In response to Ravel&#8217;s international success, the Bar Basque offers a cocktail called \u201cL&#8217;Heure espagnole\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>1927 |<\/strong> Maurice Ravel chooses the present 13 rue de Tourasse as his summer residence, which he keeps until his last stay.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>1928 |<\/strong> In summer, he devotes himself to composing the famous <em>Bol\u00e9ro<\/em> for Ida Rubinstein&#8217;s ballets.<br \/>\nNovember of the same year: Maurice Ravel gives concerts in Bilbao and San Sebastian.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>1929 |<\/strong> Composition of piano concertos: <em>Concerto in G<\/em>, based on the rhapsody <em>Zapiak-bat<\/em> (Basque concerto, according to Marguerite Long).<br \/>\n<em>Concerto for the left hand<\/em> (with a Basque theme).<br \/>\nIn September, a Ravel festival is held in Biarritz and Saint-Jean-de-Luz.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>1930 |<\/strong> August 24, tribute to Maurice Ravel: inauguration of the Quai Ravel, large pelota game, concert at the H\u00f4tel du Palais in Biarritz (with Ravel at the piano).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>1932 |<\/strong> Concert in San Sebastian with orchestra. The first signs of his illness appear during the summer in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, where he devotes himself to his last compositions: the three songs in the collection <em>Don Quichotte \u00e0 Dulcin\u00e9e<\/em> (the second, <em>Chanson \u00e9pique<\/em>, is a slow-melodic zortziko).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>1935 |<\/strong> He visits the Basque country several times: he is already very ill.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>1937 |<\/strong> On December 20, at the age of 62, Maurice Ravel dies in Paris after trepanation.
